As 2025 comes to a close, many people start thinking about New Year’s resolutions. This time of year can be overwhelming, with increased conversations online, among friends, and within families about setting goals to change your appearance, weight, or lifestyle in the new year.

Unfortunately, body dissatisfaction and poor body image are common across all ages but in particular amongst younger people, are linked to a higher risk of developing an eating disorder. Unrealistic beauty standards and unrelenting input from social media can make it difficult to develop and implement healthy body image habits.
Here’s how to flip your body image script in 2026 and foster body acceptance, self-esteem, and overall wellbeing.
Stop Evaluating Your Body by Weight or Shape
Don’t let the number on the scale define your self-worth
Avoid letting weight changes dictate your emotions or mood
Refrain from criticising body parts as “too big,” “too small,” or any other judgement
Shift Your Focus to Functionality, Health, and Kindness
Celebrate what your body allows you to do- walk, dance, breathe, hug your loved ones
Remember that health isn’t determined by size; wellbeing exists across many body shapes and weights
Speak to your body with the same compassion you’d offer a friend

Let Go of Unhelpful Comparisons and Expectations
Comparing yourself to others fuels body dissatisfaction
Be aware of how diet culture and social media influence your perception
Remember that you don’t need to feel body-positive all the time
Flip the Script: Embrace Body Positivity
Every body is unique; imagine how boring the world would be if we all looked the same!
Question narrow appearance ideals and remember that online content can be misleading
On challenging days, focus on self-kindness: nourish your body, move in ways that feel good, rest when needed, and speak gently to yourself

In 2026 and beyond, focus on building healthy body image, self-esteem, and wellbeing. By shifting your mindset, you
can support your own mental and physical health while being a positive role model for those around you.
